Home Heat Pump Installation

Heat pump installation in Cowpens, SC designed for the coldest nights

A heat pump can heat and cool your home with one outdoor unit, but only if it is sized and configured for winter as carefully as summer. That is where our design process begins.

  • Heating load drives the sizing
  • Backup heat configured correctly
  • Placement planned for snow and drainage
  • Heating load
  • Balance point
  • Defrost drainage
  • Backup staging
  • Airflow per ton
  • Line set sizing
Winter performance comes firstCooling is easy for a heat pump. Heating well in cold weather takes planning.

Designing a heat pump system around winter

Heat pumps have changed a great deal in recent years. Variable speed compressors and improved refrigerant systems allow many current models to keep producing useful heat at outdoor temperatures that would have overwhelmed older equipment. That makes a heat pump a realistic primary heating source for many homes, but it also raises the stakes on design. A system sized only for summer cooling can come up short on the coldest nights.

Our design starts with a room by room heating and cooling load calculation. In most climates with real winters, the heating load is larger than the cooling load. We look at how the heat pump model you are considering performs at low outdoor temperatures, using manufacturer performance data rather than just the nominal rating. That tells us how much of your winter heating the heat pump can handle on its own.

The goal is a system where backup heat is the exception, not the routine. Controls setup is what makes that happen.

The point where the heat pump can no longer keep up by itself is called the balance point. Below it, backup heat fills the gap. Backup can be electric resistance heat strips in the air handler, or a gas furnace in a dual fuel system. We configure the thermostat and controls so backup heat comes on only when it is needed, in stages where possible, rather than running whenever the house is a degree or two below the setting.

Placement of the outdoor unit matters more for a heat pump than for an air conditioner. In heating mode, the unit produces meltwater during defrost cycles, so it needs to sit high enough to stay clear of snow buildup and drain properly without creating ice on walkways. We plan stands or brackets, clearances and drainage paths as part of the installation.

Airflow deserves attention too. Heat pumps deliver air at a lower temperature than a furnace, so they depend on adequate airflow to keep rooms comfortable. We measure static pressure on your existing ductwork and identify restrictions before installation. If ducts are undersized or leaking, the proposal explains the correction needed, and our Ductwork Install And Replace page describes that work in more detail.

Installation follows the same careful steps we use on every refrigerant system: nitrogen brazing, pressure testing and evacuation before charging, followed by measured commissioning in both heating and cooling modes. We walk you through thermostat settings, explain what defrost cycles look and sound like, and register the equipment for manufacturer coverage.

Utility and government incentive programs for heat pumps change frequently, so we recommend confirming what is currently available before you decide. Third-party financing is also available subject to credit approval.

When a heat pump is worth considering

These situations often make a heat pump an attractive option for heating and cooling.

Air conditioner nearing replacement

Replacing it with a heat pump adds efficient heating for a modest difference in equipment.

Electric resistance heat today

Heat pumps can deliver the same warmth using considerably less electricity.

Interest in a dual fuel setup

Pairing a heat pump with a furnace lets each handle the conditions it suits best.

Aging heat pump with frequent repairs

Current models offer better low-temperature heating and quieter operation.

Goal of reducing fossil fuel use

A properly sized heat pump can cover much of the heating season on electricity.

Rooms that swing in temperature

Variable speed heat pumps run steadily at lower output for more even comfort.

Steps to a well-configured heat pump

Each step is built around heating performance, with cooling verified along the way.

  1. Assessment

We measure the home, inspect ductwork and electrical service, and discuss your heating fuel and comfort goals.

  2. Load and balance point analysis

Heating and cooling loads are compared with equipment performance data at low outdoor temperatures.

  3. Backup heat plan

Electric strips or dual fuel furnace backup is selected and staging strategy defined.

  4. Proposal

You receive written options with capacity, efficiency ratings, backup heat details and warranty terms.

  5. Installation

Outdoor unit is placed with snow clearance and drainage, lines are brazed, tested and evacuated.

  6. Two-mode commissioning

Heating and cooling performance are measured, controls are configured and you get a full walkthrough.

What shapes the cost of a heat pump installation

Heat pump projects vary with the equipment, the home and the backup heat approach.

Primary cost drivers for heat pump installation
Low-temperature capabilityModels designed to maintain more capacity in cold weather generally cost more.
Compressor typeVariable speed systems offer better comfort and efficiency at a higher equipment price.
Backup heat choiceElectric strips, a new furnace or integration with an existing furnace each change the scope.
Electrical serviceHeat strips and larger systems can require circuit or panel upgrades.
Ductwork correctionsRestrictive ducts may need modification to deliver the airflow a heat pump needs.
Mounting and drainageStands, brackets and drainage solutions depend on your site conditions.

Heat pump installation questions

Many current heat pumps can provide useful heat at low outdoor temperatures, and a properly designed system includes backup heat for the coldest periods. We use manufacturer performance data to show how your system will perform.

A dual fuel system pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace. The heat pump handles heating in milder weather, and the furnace takes over when it is very cold or when conditions favor it.

Often, but heat pumps depend on good airflow. We measure static pressure and inspect the ducts, then recommend changes if needed.

During winter, defrost cycles produce water that needs to drain away, and the unit should stay clear of snow. Raising it on a stand or bracket helps with both.

Incentive programs change regularly and vary by utility and program. We recommend checking current options before purchase, and we can provide equipment documentation you may need.

Homeowners who switched to heat pumps

We moved from electric baseboard to a heat pump. The difference in comfort is huge, and the backup heat rarely comes on because of how they set up the controls.
